Yesterday, right after finishing up a few new designs in a new collection I'm working on, my computer died. Literally, it went "pffffft" and croaked. So in the last 24 hours or so I've been spiffing up my new system with all the bells and whistles I need it to have, to do my thang. Having to do that has prevented me from designing so I wanted to just tell you all here, what's coming:

The End of the World. Yep, those Mayans told us the calendar for ALL time ends on 12.21.12, and you know... I believe them! (Not really, but it's a great excuse for a fun party, don't you think?)

Now I realize the end of the world is a good 11 months away, but for something that spectacular, it makes sense to start planning your exit celebrations well in advance. So, with that in mind there are some fun new customizable end of the world party invitations available at Reflections zazzle:

Zazzle Product Review: Custom Ornaments

During one of the many, many, many great sales zazzle had at Christmastime, I took advantage and bought these great ornaments:

While my camera truly doesn't do them justice, I can say without hesitation that they are just super-fantastic.

Product quality: first, while the dimensions state that they are nearly 3 inches diameter and over an ounce in weight, they were actually bigger and heavier than I imagined. A very solid feel in the hand and they hung wonderfully on the Christmas tree. I look forward to bringing these out year after year and even creating new ones now (I used the youngest four's school pictures) that I know just how wonderful they really are. I really like the gold ribbon that comes with them but I wanted a longer ribbon so I replaced them all with Christmas curling ribbon for hanging on the tree.

Customization options: when I created these I wanted the customer to be able to truly personalize them with their own pictures and text to create a great little photo keepsake to cherish or share with family. Each of these ornaments is promoted as a "baby's first Christmas" but changing the text was very simple by clicking the "customize it" button, removing one line and making the font size larger for the names. Uploading and centering pictures was just as easy and it was really a joy to see them take shape the way they do.

Print quality: all four of these ornaments printed not only true to color (my camera throws the color off a little but trust me, they're awesome!) the way I designed them, but the alignment was nearly 100% spot on. Only the mouse ornament printed a little larger than I expected but as you can see it turned out wonderfully anyway. I suppose I'd be the only one who noticed the difference since I'm the one who created it! The pictures I uploaded in place of the baby pictures printed wonderfully too although a tad darker than I expected. I would strongly recommend using a photo with a very light or even white background so that the face of the subject is better framed.

Yet another fantastic job by zazzle, 5 gold stars and 10 thumbs up!

Zazzle Product Review: Progman!

During the fantastic sales zazzle.com had running at Christmastime, I took advantage of many of them and was able to purchase some great stuff at really GREAT prices. I have a huge selection of products to review but today we're going to start with some Progman items I bought for my hubby. He's a huge progressive rock fan so I created this "progman" (play on words - frog/prog listening to his prog in his headphones) graphic for him.

Starting with the mug I can tell you when we took it out of the box we both just said "wow!" My husband took this pic with his phone and the color, clarity and sharpness of the image on the mug is actually much bolder and brighter in person than it looks here.

Perfectly centered exactly where it should be, the image really stands out on this great 17 oz porcelan mug. Allow me to add, it's his favorite mug now and he uses it every single day. So, zazzle rocked yet another print job and quality merchandise with this mug.

Up next is this awesome little Samsung Galaxy phone case. We were out to dinner when I snapped this pic with my own phone and the lighting wasn't the best in the world but you can see that it's a great little case with yet another fantastic print job.

The case itself is a dark charcoal gray (not black as it appears) and the cracks & distresses in the first name is intentional - it's a stock zazzle font that is supposed to look that way. His phone case is a little different (the name) than the one in the store because, well, he's special and I made it a little unique, just for him.

As for the quality of the case, I can't say enough good things about it. It's a hard plastic case but light as a feather. It fits the phone perfectly and provides fantastic protection while looking really cool at the same time. I held off ordering a case for my own phone until we could review this one, and now I'm ready to order my own. I LOVE these cases for the Samsung Galaxy!

Last but certainly not least is this handsome model in his brand new Progman tee that he received just today.

I really wish my camera could capture the color on this shirt, because when he opened it that was the first thing we noticed. Truly, the color just pops off the shirt!

This is zazzle's "value" tee which is a Hanes ComfortSoft heavyweight t-shirt. 100% cotton and tagless (which I love!) it's the shirt you want a whole drawerful of. It's a perfect thickness for spring or summer wear-alone or winter wear under a jacket. This shirt is pre-shrunk cotton but I sized up for him because he prefers a more relaxed fit, and when he took it right out of the package and put it on, it fits perfectly!

It is a little bit stiff, right out of the package (not too bad, but it's noticable) so I would recommend a wash first, but he's wearing his anyway.

All in all, these products get 10 thumbs up and 5 stars each for both print quality AND merchandise quality. Yet again, zazzle.com knocks it out of the ballpark and they even did it during the crazy Christmas rush of orders and print job. Excellent work, zazzle!

They're Just Magic!

Cupcakes.
Cupcakes with mounds of luscious, sweet frosting and colorful candy sprinkles.
Ahhhhh...

You can't get around it, cupcakes are just magic. Ask any kid under the age of 90 (who hasn't forgotten what it's like to be a kid) and they will agree with this statement every single time. Even if they have the flu, just came home from the dentist or finished their supper. It doesn't even matter if they want a cupcake, all they have to do is see one or hear someone talk about one and the magic-ness of cupcakes penetrates through into their happy-place and makes them want one. I'm not even sure how their magic really works, I just know it does.

Introducing: Progman (and Proggirl!)

My husband is a huge (read: HUGE) progressive rock fan. Somewhere to the tune of around 300+ cds in his ever growing collection of really amazing music by such wider known bands as Genesis, Yes, King Crimson and lesser known artists like Anekdoten, White Willow and Steven Wilson. It's kind of funny because myself, I'm a "classic" rock girl who is sort of snobbish when it comes to bands like Fleetwood Mac, Zepplin and Pink Floyd - and pretty much anything produced in that genre between the mid 60's and mid 70's. However, when he started really persuing his collection of prog rock, I also became a fan. Some of the bands I really like are Airbag, Greylevel and Anekdoten.

Now, to anyone who has no idea what prog is, I realize this means absolutely nothing. To those people I say: what a shame you haven't been exposed to this amazing talent! ;-)

The reason I'm telling you all this is because hubby recently decided he needed a "prog" design. On a mug, a t-shirt or something - he didn't really care he just wanted a progman design. What I came up with is a bit of a departure from what prog fans might normally find on cd covers, but he loved it and so did I. Progman (and Proggirl!) is now available on a limited number of great merch (shirts, mugs, keychains, phone cases, travel speaker and magnets - more coming soon) from zazzle and you can find it all here at Reflections zazzle.

Product Review: Zazzle's New Premium Flex Magnets

Everyone knows I choose zazzle to design and sell my family fun graphic design work to others, but the truth is, I'm a diehard customer of zazzle too! They're just a great company to do business with, and their products are just top-notch. Zazzle recently introduced a new style of magnet, the premium flex magnet. They come in two sizes, 4"x6" and 3"x4". Here's the product description:

Right now, I'm on a "replace all the old fridge magnets" kick, so I decided to create some fun new styles and upload my four youngest kid's pics and customize each one. Since they're a new product, for shipping to Canada the only shipping option available was express and it was a little more expensive than I would have liked. However, I ordered these magnets on the 26th and they arrived on the 29th. Now for Canadian residents who are accustomed to shipping times of weeks, this was a gigantic pleasant surprise.

The first thing I noticed about these great little magnets is how weighty and sturdy they are. They are indeed flexible but they're solid magnets. Very strong, they made it a little tricky to even pull them apart from each other in the envelope. This means they're nice and strong for holding anything on whatever surface you put them on, fridge, freezer, file cabinet, locker, whatever!

The second thing that struck me was the vivid printing. Here are some pics of the actual magnets I ordered:

My camera doesn't really do it justice, but the color and print quality on these magnets is just fantastic. Plus, the lamination over the top ensures that the color will stay true for a very long time - and keep them water resistant.When I chose the 3x4 size I was a little unsure that they might be smaller than I wanted. Ordering online for sizes sometimes can be tricky since you can't hold it in your hand and get a good visual this way. The size however, is absolutely perfect. Slightly larger than a standard business card they're the perfect size to frame the custom photo plus be useful to hold several things to the fridge at the same time.

So there you have it folks, zazzle's newest product is indeed, another very cool little item. I plan to add many more styles of these in the next few weeks, including some really handy calendar magnets for 2012.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Photoshop

Recently some designer aquaintances and I were discussing popular cultural trends and in a way making fun of them. In particular we mentioned how certain design elements are hugely popular for a while and then other elements come along to replace them. Certain things like cupcakes, chandeliers, certain font styles, patterns (damask) owls, polkadots, color schemes and the Honey Badger.

Yep, the Honey Badger. You may have never heard of a honey badger but many have. For reasons that only pyschologists with 100 years of training in the human psyche can explain, a youtube video of a honey badger went viral this past spring and designers jumped on the bandwagon and began designing honey badger t-shirts, mugs, mouse pads and every other kind of merchandise you can shake a stick at. Why?? Well, because the way our culture works, once something goes "viral" online it becomes popular offline and our society wanted a piece of the action by wearing or using something with a popular item on it. In this case it's the Honey Badger.

After our brief discussion on this subject and purely as a joke, I decided to create my own version of the popular Honey Badger shirt. See, there are basically 3 groups in society. The first one is the group that jumps all over everything popular, everything trendy, and gobbles it up like candy. The second is the group that hates this stuff and finds it highly annoying. The third is the group that tends to wonder if they've been living in a cave because they've never heard of such things like a Honey Badger, can't figure out why he's such a popular little creature and doesn't have a clue at all why their friends are either loving or hating the latest trend. Sometimes I think I live in the third group, sometimes I find myself in the second group and I must confess, once in a while I am in the first group and if something popular is just WAY too cool, I can see why folks enjoy it. I created this Anti-Honey Badger t-shirt design mostly for those in groups two and three.

The funniest thing about this new design is, 1.) it immediately won a Today's Best Award from the brilliant folks at zazzle (they hand those out to designs they believe will be good sellers) and it immediately jumped to the very first page of Honey Badger t-shirts on zazzle. Both funny and completely unexpected, I think instead of creating pop culture designs (which I don't do much of anyway) I'll stick with creating anti-pop culture designs for those of us that tend to find them either annoying, or can't figure out why in the world they're so popular in the first place.

Zazzle Product Review: Magnets

I don't know about your house, but in my house fridge magnets are kind of a big deal. The fridge being one of the central places in the house where you know everyone will visit, makes it the perfect place to pop a magnet there just because it's a cool magnet, or to use to hold important items where everyone can see them. On my fridge we have magnets from tourist areas, state magnets, sentimental and/or funny quotes, magnets shaped like cows, wolves, bird houses and more.

We LOVE our fridge magnets and now we have two brand new ones I'd like to show off:

Both of these cute little magnets I custom designed myself at zazzle. My cell phone camera doesn't really do them the justice they deserve but I assure you they look in person exactly the way they looked on my screen when I designed them, except for one small detail. In person, they look even better! As you can clearly see I've deleted our actual phone numbers (not that I don't want everyone calling us, it's just that if you all did, we'd never get anything done), but you can also see that the printing comes out crystal clear and very easy to read.

Zazzle offers magnets in 2 shapes (square and round) and four sizes (square: 2"x2", and round in small:1.25", standard: 2.25" and large: 3") but my personal favorite is the 2" square magnets. The product description tells you that they come with a scratch and UV resistant mylar coating and truth be told, they simply look fabulous. The magnet itself attached to the back is nice and strong and heavy enough to hold all kinds of great things! All in all, zazzle is just a really great place to buy a cool magnet. In the market place there you have tons of choices from Save the Date, Cute, Cars, Photo Frames, Baby Shower and many many more. There are over a MILLION magnets to choose from in the zazzle marketplace created by some pretty talented folks. You can even design your own with pretty much anything you want on it. Magnets are a great and inexpensive gift idea for all kinds of events and celebrations from new babies, save the date for weddings, personalized name magnets for kids (kids LOVE stuff with their own name on it!) or just because magnets are cool.

While I don't actually have "cell phone number" magnets at Reflections zazzle right now (and I just may add them real soon, they're perfect for parents, kids, babysitters, or anyone else who would like to make sure their contact number is prominently displayed in a great place) I do have oodles and oodles of magnets in store which have certainly added to the million+ in zazzle's marketplace. Technically, "oddles" is over 1,000 styles.

Zazzle Product Review: Ladies Ringer T-shirt

Last time I did a zazzle product review it was for the Ladies Casual Scoop Neck tee, and you can see that review here. This time around, it's the super cute Ladies Ringer Tee!

Shown here on zazzle's model Amber, the ladies Ringer Tee is a product by bella. Their product description:

"This vintage-inspired ringer is always in style. It’s also soft and comfy. Designed just for women by Bella, it has a custom contoured fit. The body of the shirt is light-colored with contrasting neckline and sleeve bands. It’s made from 164g, combed, ring spun 100% cotton, 1x1 rib knit. Imported." The apparel specs at the bottom of the product page say:

Follows body closely for a snug fit
Order one size up for a classic fit
Order two sizes up for a relaxed fit
Sizes may run smaller than expected

If you're going to order this style, you really need to pay close attention to those product specs because they are exactly right on! The two things I'd really like to focus on is the fit/apparel quality and the print quality.

The Fit & The Print

Keeping the product specs in mind, and as you can see here by my own model Rachel (who happens to be my 12 year old daughter) the fit is really wonderful. Rachel likes her shirts to fit well but to be comfy, so for her I ordered 2 sizes larger than her usual size, due to the product specs. Rachel is wearing the extra large bella Ringer Tee.

Not only was it the perfect (sized up) size for her, the quality of the shirt itself is just incredible. It's very lightweight but super soft, and the green around the arms and neckline just really stands out. Rachel just loves her froggy shirt so she wears it a lot and it's been laundered many many times now, but as you can see the green frog still looks just amazing.

Not only was I super impressed with this print quality when it arrived, the greens and yellow hues in this frog actually look better in real life than they do on the screen. I highly recommend the bella Ringer Tee for ladies, but must strongly stress keep the sizing specs in mind when ordering or you will be disappointed as the style does run very small.

Zazzle Product Review: Ladies Casual Scoop Neck Tee

Not only do I design and post products for sale at zazzle.com, like others I am also a super happy zazzle.com customer myself!

I love zazzle. Love the print quality, love the product quality, love the fabulous customer service, and love the opportunity to express my passion for creating while being a full-time stay at home (work at home) mom. I like to purchase what I call "test" products as often as possible from my own shop to make sure the design quality is top notch, and to see for myself the product quality as well so I can pass along that information first-hand to customers and potential customers. I've purchased many products such as binders, business cards, greeting cards, invitations, doodle speakers, tote bags and more. Today I'd like to give a closer look to the Ladies Casual Scoop Neck tee, shown here. This is the actual product/design I recently ordered for myself and to sum it all up to begin with, I love it! But here are some more details:

Most Important: The Fit

One of the drawbacks to ordering apparel online is not being able to try it on first to see how it really fits. Let's face it, we've all seen clothes that look fantastic on the manequin but once we try them on we find out they don't work at all for our body shape/type. I prefer looser, more comfy shirts and this one is absolutely perfect for that. I usually order a size up and I was not disappointed with that option on this product. The sizing information says it's a classic fit and it loosely follows the shape of your body, and that is 100% accurate. One of the things I love most about this style is the scoop neck as opposed to the standard neckline of the unisex tee. With a lower neckline than the standard tee (but not too low) it's very comfortable, just the way I like it. It's also very lightweight so its perfect for warm days all by itself, and would certainly be great for layering too on colder days, due to the thinness of the material. As much as I really love the longer, more "baggy" basic unisex tees (I always size up on those too), I can easily see myself ordering on this style much more often now. Yes, I love it that much! (I've included a picture of the actual shirt here, but my camera doesn't really capture how vivid the graphic actually is).

The Print Quality

Zazzle never fails to amaze me with their printing technique and this case is not the exception. When this shirt came the image on the front was as bold and bright as shown on my screen (if not more so). I've worn it several times and washed it several times (in cold, no bleach) and it actually looks better with each wash. The image is softer to the touch but retains it's bright colors. I can see wearing this for several summers before I'll need to replace it.
